Mexican tourism is set for a substantial investment boost over the coming years, the government has revealed. The country is hoping to secure $20bn (£10.27bn) of private investment by 2012, which would represent a six-fold increase. Mexican president Felipe Calderon revealed that the Central American country saw record investment of $3.5bn in 2007, DPA reports. ‘Our wish is, of course, not just to keep up, but to increase the rhythm of investment in the sector this year,’ he added. ‘By 2012 we want Mexico to have private investment in tourism of at least $20 billion.’ The Mexican travel industry is set to target a number of areas that seem ripe for expansion over the coming years, such as cultural tourism, eco-tourism and the conventions sector. An increase in European tourists is expected over the coming years, with the strength of the euro one of the anticipated factors in this trend.
