Mexico Tourism Weblog / » Mexico promotes sea turtle tourismA new conservation tourism programme based on promoting the welfare of Sea Turtles has been announced by Ocean Conservancy. Sea Turtle Ecological Expeditions will alert holidaymakers as to the location of conservation areas for sea turtles which will hopefully result in support for sea turtle protection. The programme, SEE Turtles, will also give tourists turtle-watching guidelines to help reduce the negative impact tourism could have on turtles.
“People who are on the ground protecting sea turtles where turtles feed or nest can make the biggest positive impact for the animals … because of their proximity to turtles,” said Dr Wallace J Nichols, a senior scientist with Ocean Conservancy. He added that the programme will help to support communities as tourists can take sea turtle tours run by former fishermen. Eco-tourism is a form of tourism that appeals to an increasingly ecologically conscious global population. It is gaining popularity in Mexico, a country with an abundance of natural landscapes, flora and fauna and animal-life.
