Cozumel, rediscovering the roots of the island

cozumel.jpgThere are at least 30 sites on the island with traces of the Mayan culture in the process of disappearing because of the disinterest of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), says the chronicler of the city.

Since it has always been known that low housing is in the village of El Cedral in Cozumel, there are remnants of Mayan settlements.
On June 14, 2007, workers digging to build a perimeter wall were met with remnants of an old building of the Mayan culture. However, so far have not been unearthed for unknown reasons, nor, so far, INAH at its website does not include El Cedral as a settlement recognised by the unit. Only San Gervasio site appears registered as important.
According to information provided last year by Velio Vivas Valdez, chronicler of the city life, exist on the island at least 30 sites where there are archaeological remains in the process of extinction for the lack of interest by the authorities of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
Last year, the June 15, 2007, the Municipality of Cozumel and INAH signed a collaboration agreement for the rescue of El Cedral and other sites where there could be remnants of the Maya culture, but no amounts were discussed economic or goals.
Interviewed on the subject, Mayor Gustavo Joaquin Ortega said that the latest news had on the subject was that he had problems with the excavations because it is an area ejido.
But this is not the only archaeological site in Cozumel that there could be into oblivion by the delegation of INAH, as former residents of San Miguel de Cozumel have always known of the existence of debris in different parts of geography the island.
The majority is not easily accessible, but it is known for its location, and the looters and foreign nationals are exposed.
Today, archaeological sites such as El Cedral, El Caracol, the Royal Castle and San Gervasio are the only ones who are able more or less acceptable, while the rest are lost irretrievably.
