Cañon Rio La Venta. Located in El Ocote Special Biosphere Reserve, more than 60 km (37 mi) west of Tuxtla Gutierrez, off Highway 190. Also known as Cañon Sagrado (Holy Canyon), this place offers one of the state’s best rivers for whitewater rafting. The river stretches 80 km (50 mi) and it varies in width from 10 to 90 meters (33 to 297 feet), depending on how narrow the canyon area is and how high the river rises during the rainy season. Bahia de Matanchen (Matanchen Bay). Located 7 km (4 mi) south of the port of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is an ideal surf spot, as the waves can reach up to six feet. Los Cocos. Located 14 km (9 mi) southeast of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is a beach with moderate waves and numerous coconut trees. The beach is known for its constant breaks, making it the perfect surfing destination. Las Islitas. Lies 15 km (9 mi) southeast of San Blas. Considered one of the area’s best surfing locations, particularly in May and June when the waves are much bigger. |
