The Foreign Office reports as much as 30cm of rain has fallen in 48 hours in Villahermosa, the state capital, affecting 400,000 people. A state of emergency has been declared in Tabasco, located in the south-east of the country. “Visitors to the affected areas should keep in close touch with their travel operators and should also follow the advice of the Mexican authorities, who are actively monitoring the situation,” advised the Foreign Office. It added: “Around, 300,000 British nationals visit Mexico each year, of which, at least 250,000 visit Cancun and Playa del Carmen (see Snorkeling Cancun) . Most visits are trouble-free, but crime and kidnappings are on the increase. “You should be particularly alert in tourist areas (especially on public transport and when dealing with real or purported policemen) and exercise caution when exchanging or withdrawing money.”Source:travelbite.co.uk |
