This is an especially attractive place for first-timers to Oaxaca, who can tap into the owners’ knowledge of the area and perhaps even tour some villages with them. The good-size rooms open to a large garden with tall jacaranda trees; they are simply but comfortably furnished. Breakfast is substantial: fresh fruit, yogurt, hot cereal, eggs, bacon, juice, and coffee. The hotel is farther from downtown than most of the others listed here. This 13th edition, with artists from Chile, Argentina, Spain and Mexico, is held to publicize the importance of protecting the environment and endangered species. Besides the concerts and freeing turtles and iguanas, the Music for the Earth Environmental Award will be given to Dr. Valeria Souza, of Mexico s National Autonomous University s Ecology Institute, for her work to preserve Cuatrocienegas lakes in Coahuila State.
