As you explore the abundant rock formations, you’ll feel like you’re living in a subterranean world of adventure and beauty. In Chichen Itza’s surrounding areas you’ll find accessible caves with large caverns, narrow canals and many hidden mysteries. At many of these places you can also go hiking or horseback riding while enjoying the magic of the incredible landscape. Grutas de Balamkanche – Located 6 km (4 mi) from Chichen Itza, these caverns were once Mayan ceremonial grounds (Chichen Itza mayan ruins). Inside you’ll find the remains of countless offerings to Chaac, the Mayan rain god. You’ll also find an altar called the Throne of Balam (Jaguar), which is how the caverns got their name. The caverns’ intricate interiors, full of stalactites and stalagmites, make them ideal for cave-diving enthusiasts. Open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 and 2:00 to 4:00, and Sunday from 8:00 to 11:00 am. |
