This mostly agrarian state hosts a Saints Day for Saint Isidro Labrador, a Spanish worker saint who tilled soil in the area. The Saints Day is on May 15, but the actual celebration takes place on the eve of the feast, May 14. During the fiesta, there are castillos or “castlesâ€, which are really wooden towers with fireworks. Once lit, these castillos turn into a beautifully choreographed display of light. There are also toritos or “little bulls†filled with fireworks, which are carried on the head and shoulders of local youths, filling Tepic with loud explosions of smoke and fire as they scurry around the town square. Nayarit was formerly inhabited by the Cora and Huichol indigenous groups who settled in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. It also served as a transit area for the Tenochtitlan and Huitzilopochtli groups, and during the 18th century, became the starting point for the evangelization of Alta California.
