Mexico Tourism Weblog / Beach road between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach should be done sometime this summerOne of the most commonly asked questions at the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council is whether the road between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach is open. “They love to be able to go down that road,” said executive director Kate Wilkes. “Even the snowbirds, ‘Is the road open? Is the road open?’ It’s such a pleasant drive.” Officials with the Gulf Islands National Seashore say that a portion of the seven-mile stretch, which was damaged in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan, will reopen by the end of April. The entire road is expected to be navigable sometime this summer. “We may have to lower some speed limits and some weight limits,” said Jerry Eubanks, superintendent for the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
The first stretch to open will take travelers out to Opal Beach, which was once a full-service park. Now it consists of about 50 parking spaces that survived the storms. Portable toilets will temporarily take the place of the restroom facilities, which were destroyed. The two-lane road will be wide enough for a bike lane on both sides, Eubanks said. He added that it had been moved farther back from the Gulf of Mexico to help it survive future storms. “If we can get a few years, give the dunes time to get rebuilt, we won’t get so nervous when hurricanes come,” he added. “It will take a bad one to take (the road) out.” Wilkes said she had originally heard that the entire road would be open before Memorial Day. She was disappointed to learn that the new timeline placed the completion date later in the summer. But whenever it reopens, it will be good for tourism in both Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach, she said. “It has been a hardship,” she said.
