Takes it's name from the Nahuatl voice meaning "fishermen place". Located on the southeast extreme of the central plateau with a surface of 59,864km² and almost 217km of coast on the pacific ocean. Surrounded to the east by the states of Guerrero and México State, to the north by the states of Querétaro, Guanajuato and part of Jalisco, to the west with Colima and Jalisco and to the south with Guerrero. Communicates to the rest of the country by plenty of roads and airways, wich grow every day and facilitate access to every main tourist atraction. Michoacán is characterized by it's wide spectrum of historic and natural richness, wich has made it the big cultural center it is today.
There are beaches for every demand, from soft and hugging waters for families with children up to turbulent waves of open sea for surfing; places where Nature was extremely kind to provide them with a great variety of animal species and vegetables. And what to say about its people, kind people who are ready to offer the best services to the visitor. There are also indigenous communities where the kindliness of Nahuatl handcrafts, due to their technique and design, are attached to the norms of pre-Hispanic periods; as well as the rescue of traditions in regional outfits, music, and dance The state of Michoacán, with its fantastic landscapes, abundant vegetation, great lakes and rivers threading throughout the area, is splendid with its colorful natural beauty framed by climates ranging from warm on the coast to fresh and invigorating in the central areas.Several protected natural areas exist in Michoacán. Notably important are the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere, with two sanctuaries: Sierra Chincua and El Rosario, near the city of Zitácuaro; followed by Bosencheve National Park within the municipality of Zitácuaro, Michoacán, and the state of México; Campo del Gallo ("Field of the Rooster") in Tlalpujahua; Los Azufres ("The Sulfurs"); and Las Palomas ("The Doves") encompassing the municipalities of Hidalgo, Zinapécuaro and Maravatío; and the Eduardo Ruiz National Park in Uruapan. There are also preserves to be visited and enjoyed among the beauty of the Riverbanks of Cupatitzio, the Peak ("Pico") of Tancítaro, the Hill of Garnica, Lake Chapala with its pelican flocks and the beaches of the Michoacán coast, abundant offshore shoals for the protection and safety of sea turtles.In some of these places, a tourist can stay in natural areas, participating in activities such as hiking, camping, horseback-riding, mountain biking, star- and bird-watching, hunting, sport fishing, and interpreting and exploring nature.Each of these areas offers nearby lodging, restaurants, supplies and provisions.
In the State of Michoacan the climate varies much from place to place depending on variables such as, the altitude above sea level, ground relief and prevailing winds. The climatic conditions prevailing here are: tropical with summer rains with an average temperature of 28ºC in the hot land and on the coast; mild with summer rains with an average temperature of 22ºC in the central part of the state; dry-warm temperatures with scarce rain in the summer in the lower part of the state and in the Balsas river; depression with mild rainfall all year long and a drier winter season in the higher central part northwest of the state; and very cold to freezing weather in Angangueo and Zituacaro. |
