Mercado de Coyoacán (food area)
Besides having fruits and vegetables, the markets in Mexico holds areas for little restaurants which tend to be very economical and have great flavor, in Spanish we say that the cook has "Buen sazón" referring to the experience of seasoning the food by a cook which is completely different even if the ingredients and recipes are the same, you have to have that special touch when cooking, it's an art.
You can expect to have really fresh food as the cooks buy locally at the market and if they run out of any ingredient they will sure send somebody running to get it pronto.
When choosing a place to eat at a local market don´t go for the good looking waitresses or cooks, choose the old ladies who have the experience engraved in their heads and on their wrinkles. I always use this method and have been gifted with wonderful meals. Sometimes the stand is very modest but you can´t match the "sazón" with any of those artificial-expensive places.
In Coyoacan's market is easy to order food even if you don´t speak much Spanish, some of the restaurants/stands have a big display with pictures of the specialties, their name and price, so just point and shoot!
