Volcano of Colima - State of Colima - Tourism in Colima - Visiting Mexico

Colima State is surrounded by a multicolored geography that goes from its green valley, from where two expectacular volcanoes can be seen “El Volcán de Fuego”, an active volcano and “El Nevado de Colima”, to the beautiful beaches along its coastline with biodiverse microclimates. It is located in the middle part of the south coast of the Pacific Ocean. Colima is part of “Sierra Madre Occidental”, a mountain range, that consist of four mountainous systems. The first and the most important of the four includes the following mountains: Cerro Grande and Juripichi or Juluapan, Los Juanillos, La Astilla, El Ocote, El Peón Barrigon, San Diego and La Media Luna. The second system is formed by the parallel coast mountain range, between Marabasco and Armería rivers. El Espinazo del Diablo, El escorpión, El Tigre, El Aguacate, El Centinela, El Toro, and La Vaca mountains are part of the second system as well. The third system is located between Armería and Salado rivers and consist of these mountains: Alcomún and Partida, Miguel and Comala, San Gabriel or Callejones. The forth and the last system can be found among the Salado, Naranjo and Coahuayana rivers, where the following mountains stand out, Piscila, Volcanillos, La Palmera, El Camichín, and Copales.

In Colima, you will find landscapes of incomparable beauty in which natural treasures are abundant every step of the way. Getting into its most remote places, Colima gives you the opportunity to discover magic destinations, such as transparent lagoons, hidden grottos, high mountains, virgen beaches and magic towns.
The name Colima is derived from the náhuatl word "Colimán", as the initial dominion was called. "Colli", translated as hill, volcano or grandfather and "maitl", translated as hand or rule, combines to signify "place conquered by our grandfathers" or "place ruled by the Ancient God or Fire God", referring to the volcano.
Colima also stands out by its cultual richness. Diverse artistic manifestations do honor to this prestige that has been consolidated by the excellent quality of its museums, in which there remain art objects of different epochs, from pre-Hispanic pieces of 1500 B.C., up to objects created by comtemporary artists and the mastery of hands of the craftsman.
