Food in Campeche

Campeche cuisine is a trip in itself. However, a word of caution. Your digestive system is probably not used to spicy or exotic fare. Traditional Campeche dishes (found also in other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula) like relleno negro, frijol con puerco, cochinita pibil, cotzitos, panuchos, pibipollo and other exotic sounding dishes may not be particularly suitable to the Canadian stomach.
However, many of these dishes are delicious and perhaps you may try them in small quantities at first. If your stay in Campeche is long then you can slowly get your system used to this kind of food. Another recommendation is for you to check with your family physician if taking something in advance can help you prevent any stomach discomfort (for example, we understand that taking peptobismol daily for a week before leaving home, helps protect your stomach. note: do not under any circumstances take this as advice. CHECK with your doctor first).
Having said the above, one type of food that is superb in Campeche si Seafood. Fresh fish comes in every morning after being caught by local fishermen, whose boats you can see everywhere on the water. Most of the fish caught is consumed the same day it was taken out of the water. If it was any fresher, it would be alive. So go ahead and try a Pescado Frito or a Pescado al Mojo de Ajo and enjoy. The La Pigua restaurant is a very good choice for seafood lovers. It is the favourite among the business crowd in Campeche (no formal attire required).
Furthermore, Campeche has a wide variety of restaurants. You can have a variety of seafood and Mexican specialties like steak tacos, fajitas and sandwiches at Solé across from the embankment with a very nice patio and live music on weekends. For breakfast or lunch in the historic downtown, we suggest Marganzo, a beautiful but casual restaurant, very close to the Main Square downtown, where the waitresses wear the traditional Campeche outfit. For seafood lovers there's La Pigua, the preferred restaurant of the Campeche business and political crowd.
