The State of Campeche is located in the southwest of the Yucatan peninsula and southeast of the Mexican Republic. Bordered north with Yucatan State, south with Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala; to the eats with Quintana Roo and Belize, and west with the bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. Campeche is a State with deep historical roots. The whole surface that occupies the territory was settled, developed and flourished by ancient Mayan civilizations, which also decayed. The Mayans were known through fantastic chronicles and stories told by traveler groups, browsers and those fond of Mexican archaeology.In Mexico there are five states that form the Mayan world: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo; all states are unique and invite travelers who want to admire the majestic cities built by the Mayan descendents from the Olmecas.
All the Mayans towns constitute a group with certain particularities that characterize and differentiate them from other Mayan tribes, with diverse dialects that are still spoken today in several parts of the Mexican and Guatemalan territory. In Campeche there were the Yucatecos, Chontales and the Quejaches tribes, embracing a territory of 56 thousand 114 km2, where 1200 archaeological areas were located.
Currently, Campeche´s economy is boosted by competitive and diversified tourism. Many tourists come to visit the many archaeological sites scattered throughout the state, as well as the beautiful historical center of the capital, Campeche City. The increment of tourism activity in Campeche is evident year by year, and it is reflected in the economy of the state. With the objective of increasing visitors to the state, and the well use of our resources for tourist attractions in order to contribute to the economy development of the entity, actions already started benefits considerable advances in areas such as needed equipment that the tourists require to access the different attractions and giving the good services we now have.
The city of Campeche, which is the major tourism product of the state, besides its beautiful colonial architecture, has consolidated much of its military architecture and now day the fortress San Carlos has been established as the city museum, the rehabilitation of the light and sound show at the land wall, the new streetcar of the city; all together constitutes actions of great value for the naming of our city as “Cultural Patrimony of Humanity”, also the studies for the tourism development of Calakmul and the application of the studies on quality and competitive contributed on the awarding in the year 1999 as well. City of Carmen, with its new seaboard and beautiful beaches, obtains a great amount of its income each year from tourism and its still, as a result of its oil activity, the place with the greater amount of occupation in the entity. Every one of the 11 town villages in the State has its own tourist products to offer, such as handcraft, gastronomy, eco tourism sites, and archeological zones which come together and represent the continuous and important effort that have been able to locate Campeche as part tourism sites for the world to visit, as a place with great history and culture, attractions for the European tourists, which is the main consumer of our product.
