The Historical Center of Campeche was designed in the Renaissance stile of a “chess board” in accordance to the specifications of the Spanish Crown. On the square closest to the sea the central park was built and main town square. Though it was built for the people of the community, this square was used by the town elite, Spanish royalty and political authority for parties and ceremonies. The buildings enclosing the square were used for the government offices, The Cathedral, Navy offices, Customs and the most influent conquistadors’ houses.You can feel the presence of Campeche´s history when you stroll through the historical downtown streets. Since parts of the old fortress walls still remain, the legacy of pirates, conquerors and civil war lingers from the XIX century can be felt in the atmosphere.
Now days the historical downtown of Campeche City, main center of business, cultural, administrative and tourist activities, is surrounded by buildings from the XVI, XVII, XVIII, and XIX centuries; and edifications with military, civil and religious architecture, as well as complex offices, and houses from the XX century, located in areas gained on the sea.
Campeche developed a simple religious architecture, characterized by its military construction as wide walls and fortresses. When the first Franciscans constructions began, it was thought in the probable Indians uprisings and the necessity that would have the Spanish population to protect themselves. With time surged another motive of why the churches should have a fortress characteristic, this was the continuous pirate attacks in the Villa of San Francisco Campeche.
In the XVI Century, after the foundation of Villa, the construction of military buildings began. The first stage of buildings were modified or destroyed over the years. The second stage began in 1686 with the construction of the wall (fortress), and the third stage began at the end of the XVII Century when the havens and coast batteries were built.The construction of the wall was because of the great economical and commercial advances by then. It had 8 fortresses and 4 exit doors. It was reinforced by the San Miguel fortress and its havens, as well as San Luis and San Fernando (not existing today); and the Fortress San Jose el Alto with its batteries San Lucas and San Martin.
This interactive musical fountain, offers a show from 18:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs and it lasts around 20 minutes. They were design with the military architecture concept of the city. This park is represented by the 21 red and blue flags, which are part of the Campeche’s Shield. Park and flags are Patrimony of the World of the Mexican Republic. |
