Mexicali is the capital city of the state of Baja California. It is on the south side of the border from Calexico, California, and has the Rio Nuevo running through it.Mexicali has the largest Chinatown, La Chinesca, in Mexico. It is close to the Plaza Constitucion, where you can hear mariachi bands rehearse.
To the North of the city are its foremost religious landmark, the Catedral de la Virgen de Guadalupe, and the Centro de Estudios Culturales - Museo UABC, which is a small museum with exhibits on paleontology, evolution, geology etc.
Every year in September and October, Mexicali celebrates its founding in 1903 with the Fiesta del Sol, the Festival of the Sun, with concerts, parades, plays and art exhibits.
